Inside the Installation: What to Expect When We Fit Your Stove

Walking you through the process step by step.

Getting a new stove is exciting, but if it is the first time you have had a stove fitted, you might be unsure about what actually happens on installation day. Having a clear picture of the process can help you prepare your home and know what to expect from start to finish. This guide explores the installation process.

Step 1: Site Visit and Preparation

Before any work begins, an installer will visit your property to make sure the chosen stove is a good match for your home. This visit is used to:

  • Take accurate measurements so the stove fits perfectly in its position
  • Look at the existing chimney or work out the best route for a new flue system
  • Check that the planned layout meets safety standards and legal requirements
  • Talk through design options such as hearth styles or finishing details

This stage helps ensure that everything is agreed in advance and avoids delays later.

Step 2: Setting Up the Work Area

Blue and tan square tiles, angled view, textured surface.

On the installation day, the space around the stove location is prepared. Floors and nearby furniture are covered, and a clear path is made to bring the appliance safely into the room. If there is an old stove or fireplace, it will be removed before any new fittings are added.

If any building work is required, such as adjusting the fireplace opening or strengthening the base, this is done at this stage.

Step 3: Installing the Hearth and Surround

The hearth acts as the safe base for the stove, protecting the floor from heat. Whether you have chosen stone, slate, or another suitable material, it will be laid and levelled to the right height. Any surrounding features, such as a decorative mantel or back panel, are added now to frame the installation.

Step 4: Adding the Flue System

A curved metal flue pipe extends from the red chimney of a brick building, with scaffolding in the foreground.

The flue is what carries smoke and gases safely out of your home, and its correct installation is essential.

  • A liner may be fitted inside an existing chimney to improve efficiency and keep the system cleaner
  • If your home does not have a chimney, a specially designed flue system is created and installed
  • Every joint is checked to ensure it is fully sealed and secure

By the end of this step, the stove will be ready to connect.

Step 5: Positioning and Connection

The stove is carefully placed on the hearth and connected to the flue. Any extra features, such as outside air inlets or integrated boiler systems, are fitted at this point to ensure everything works as intended.

Step 6: Testing and Guidance

Before the job is complete, the installer will:

  • Light the stove to make sure it is running correctly
  • Inspect all seals and safety measures
  • Explain how to light and control the fire
  • Offer advice on suitable fuels and how to store them

All relevant documentation will be provided so you have proof the work meets current regulations.
